Thortek are also very active in developing electric motors. We are working on a revolutionary electric motor design that is more compact, more efficient, and less expensive to manufacturer than contemporary BLDC motor designs.
A typical, customized electric motor cost $500,000 and takes 12 months to complete. Thortek will be able to design, fabricate, test, and ship a customized motor in less than 30-days, at a fraction of this cost.
Motor design and manufacturing is to be done in Estill County.
Overview:
•Thortek has developed a new flywheel with transportation & telecommunication applications
•NASA awarded Thortek a SBIR Phase II grant in 2002 to develop an electric motor that will be used in Thortek’s flywheel systems.
•NASA awarded Thortek a SBIR Phase I grant in 2004 to develop a magnetic bearing system that will be used in Thortek’s flywheel and electric motor systems.
Applications:
•Aerospace
•Electric vehicles
•Flywheel Systems
Capabilities:
•Increased power density
•Reduced mass for space applications
•Replacement of conventional electric motors at less life-cycle cost
Benefits:
•Reduced friction from surface and air drag
•Increased power output maintianing a lower rate of energy consumption
•Reduced life-cycle cost of electric motor system
